Little by Little
I love a book that gives me a short phrase to use that conveys an attitude or a way of approaching something. I can skip the explanation in the thick of the moment and give a simple reminder to my kids of the mindset they need to be in with just a few words.
does just that with the story of Otto the otter learning to swim. The playful illustrations first show you all the things that Otto
capable of doing ("Being kind to frogs Mud sliding Making very good sand castles Slippery-rock hopping.") and then take you through the effort he gives to learn to swim. I love that he learns in his own time and that he breaks up a very challenging task into smaller, manageable pieces that he spends time mastering one by one. Otto's family supports him but
does the hard work and does not give up. You'll be proud of Otto at the end when he says "I did it...I can really swim!" and I hope you'll also remind the young ones in your life to work at something, independently, 'little by little' so they too can 'start small....and finish big!'
